Life can be a rollercoaster—one minute you’re on top of the world, the next you’re upside down struggling for air and wondering how it ended up here. We all have our good days and bad days (cue Megan Thee Stallion); it’s totally normal. What matters most is that in spite of this, we keep pushing forward to become the best version of ourselves. It’s okay if you stumble, it’s okay if you need to restart your resolution—what’s important is that you keep trying. When you stop trying, you reject the following:
You are exactly who you want to be right now.
What is powerful about that phrase is the fact you can change at any time. All you might have to do is re-frame something or dig a little deeper. Here are five quick tips to help you accept that phrase and recommit to your intentions/restart your resolutions so you can be the person you want to be.
Tip 1: Take a Break
Sometimes we just need a break from our routine and the grind of capitalism and never-ending task lists. Taking a step back gives us time to reflect, recharge, and refocus. Whether it’s booking that weekend trip or taking a lunchtime walk, taking a break is essential. #TreatYourself
As it relates to your goals and intentions, you need to be okay with understanding breaks may look different. My break from running because of shin splints was several weeks long, but I came back and am so happy that I am healthier and stronger than I was before (aka running faster and longer).
Tip 2: Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone
When we get too comfortable in routine, we lose sight of why we started doing something in the first place. We get stuck. We don’t grow. Getting out of your comfort zone allows us to challenge ourselves mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually which helps us grow and potentially look at the same problem through different lenses or from new angles. Try something new—go for a hike or take a pottery class! Instead of Starbucks, try the local java joint. Instead of rushing to catch the end of happy hour, try organizing a game night with friends and colleagues. The key is challenging yourself in ways that make you uncomfortable, but also make you grow as an individual.
Tip 3: Invest In Yourself
Investing in yourself means both financially and mentally committing resources towards developing yourself as an individual. This could range from signing up for classes or investing in professional development opportunities, like joining seminars or networking events that will help grow your skillset or career path. Additionally, investing in yourself could also mean taking care of yourself physically by eating healthy meals or exercising regularly—anything that provides personal growth should be considered self-investment! Because we all know that at the end of the day, no one is looking out for you like your number one. So look out for yourself and get/learn the tools you need to level up.
Tip 4: Set Realistic Goals And #Accountability
Setting realistic goals allows us to stay focused on achieving them without getting overwhelmed by challenges along the way. What I want to clarify is that they should be big enough to scare you, but in a way that says “Could I actually…do…it?” Make sure your 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year goals are measurable so that when they are achieved it becomes clear that progress has been made towards becoming better versions of ourselves! I know it’s weird but I’m telling you, write down these goals somewhere visible so that they remain top-of-mind throughout the journey towards achieving them – holding yourself accountable will help ensure progress continues being made!
Tip 5: Surround Yourself With Positive People And Energy
Surrounding yourself with positive people who motivate you will help push past any blocks standing between the proverbial here and there. These people should inspire us with their work ethic – staying motivated is key. When we are the sum of the 5 people we spend the most time with, it becomes imperative to surround ourselves with people who will reflect and amplify where we want to go and what we want to do.
Becoming better versions of ourselves requires commitment, dedication, hard work, but also patience – this isn’t an overnight process but rather one requiring steps taken each day in order consistently move forward even when facing challenges along the way. By following these five tips – taking breaks from routine activities; getting out of comfort zones; investing in oneself; setting realistic goals; surrounding oneself with positive people – you will recommit yourself towards your goals and intentions. 2023 is your year, baby – now go get after it! I believe in you!
